by an Operating Support grant from
the Massachusetts Cultural Council

Facilities

Two areas are available for exhibits and postings:
  1. The main staircase adjacent to the front entrance is a small, well-lit area, conducive to a limited grouping of photographs, paintings and similar items.
  2. The table at the top of the stairs is available for separate exhibits. Posters may be hung on the wall behind it.

Use of Space

The exhibitions are the :responsibility of the Library Director, under the supervision of the Board of Library Trustees. The following conditions apply:

  1. Those interested in using the Library exhibit space must fill out an application in person. Applications will be approved according to the Selection Procedure outlined below. No exhibit can be installed without the permission of the Library Director or designee.
  2. Prices may be placed on or near display objects. Those interested in making purchases are directed to call the artist or person responsible (listed on the application form). Items on display need not be for sale.
  3. Material exhibited in the Library does not necessarily represent the views of the Library and an exhibition does not imply r endorsement by either the Board of Library Trustees or the Library Staff. The Library assumes no responsibility for the preservation, protection or possible damage or theft of any item displayed.
  4. Since communicating with the public to make it aware of featured exhibits is an important aspect of the sue of exhibit space, exhibitors are encouraged to send press releases regarding their display(s). If space permits, an appropriate poster, no larger than 8 1/2 X 11 inches may be placed in the Library's outside bulletin board. After the exhibitor has obtained permission for use of the space, it is important that the time for hanging or installing the items is cleared with the Library Director. Owners of the items are responsible for hanging their materials. They may bring wire,
tacks, etc. The artist is responsible for taking down and removing his/her work at the conclusion of the display period.
  5. After the exhibitor has obtained permission for use of the space, the time for hanging or installing the items must be cleared with the Library Director. The artist or exhibitor is responsible for needed materials, and for taking down and removing the work at the conclusion of the display period.
  6. Any artist wishing to "open" an exhibit with a reception must have the Library Director's permission. No alcoholic beverages may be served.
  7. The exhibit space may not be used for entrepreneurial or commercial purposes, for the solicitation of business, for profit. Religions proselytizing and partisan political recruitment are similarly prohibited; educational exhibits on these subjects are allowed.
Duration of Exhibits

Exhibits are generally scheduled for one month and begin on the first day of the month that the Library is open to the public. Exhibits must be taken down the last day of the month.

Selection Procedure

At least an eighteen month period must pass before an exhibitor may use the exhibit space again. Group shows by more than one artist or local organization, such as the Council on Aging, are exempt from the eighteen month requirement. Exhibit space is filled on an eighteen-month cycle, land exhibitors are selected by lottery. To participate in the lottery, exhibitors must reside in Provincetown (or own property in Provincetown) and complete the application form. Six months before the next free block of time is opened, exhibitors' applications will be drawn by lottery for sequential months. Approved exhibitors may swap months with one another with the approval of the Library Director.

Adopted by the Board of Trustees on March 13, 2002. For further information on Art Exhibits at the Provincetown Public Library contact Debra DeJonker Berry, Library Director, at 508-487-7094.
