Capital Campaign
In 1999, the Provincetown Public Library Board of Library Trustees announced its intent to move the Library from the limited space in its Freeman Street location to an 1860 National Landmark building at the corner of Commercial and Center streets by 2005.

In July, 2001, the Trustees launched a $4.1 million Capital Campaign to finance the project. To date, the Campaign has raised a total of $4 million toward that goal.

Already in hand are a $2 million Massachusetts State Construction Grant awarded in 2001, and a $1 million Town

contribution. As well, the Library Building Campaign has attracted more than $1million in cash gifts and pledges from individuals, businesses and foundations. To date, more than 1,300 individuals from 38 states across the country have contributed to this Campaign, many of them several times over.

In April, 2005, the Library moved into its new home at 356 Commercial Street. The entire structure had been gutted and reconstructed, retaining the building’s historic elements. Historic in nature and design, the Second Floor Children’s Library is built around a 66.5-foot half-scale model of the “Rose Dorothea”, the famous schooner that won the race from Boston to Gloucester, and captured the Lipton Cup in August, 1907.

Today, the Trustees are seeking $600,000 to complete the outstanding components of the building. These include restoring/reconstructing the Belfry and the historic decorative facade, completing the Lower Level, and landscaping the building grounds.

To attract donors, the Trustees have established a Donor Recognition Policy. In addition, Special Named Gift Opportunities are available and range from $2,500 for naming an historic stack end panel; $5,000 for each of the two hand-crafted catalog computer stations near the Historic Front Entrance; $10,000 for the Center Street Computer Center; $10,000 for the Children’s Library’s Arts & Crafts Center; $10,000-to-$20,000 for various historic windows; $100,000 for the First Floor Reading Room or the Nathan Freeman Local History Room; and $250,000 for the Historic Front Façade, among others.

Tax-deductible contributions to the Campaign may be made by cash or credit card, or pledged over a number of years. Checks may be made payable to the “PPL Building Fund”.
