CAPE COD MAYAN HOME PAGE

The civilization of the ancient Maya covered the area of the world now known as Southern Mexico, Yucatan, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. Although the Mayan's great cities and temples were already abandoned by the time the Spanish conquered those lands, the ruins intrigued travelers since their "rediscovery" by explorers in the early 1800's.

For those with a passion for travel and delving into ancient mysteries, visiting these strangely beautiful and haunting places today can satisfy the "Indiana Jones" in us. Sites such as Chichen Itza, Tikal, Palenque, Uxmal and Copan continue to amaze and fascinate traveler and scholar alike.

Most interesting though, is the fact that the Mayan people still inhabit the area. They moved from their cities when war and over development of the land forced them to choose a simpler way of life. Many Mayan languages can still be heard in the towns and villages of this region.

In recent years the Maya have been under siege from the non-indigenous governments ruling what was once their land. The civil war in Guatemala , the impoverishment and virtual slavery of Mayans in Chiapas, Mexico demonstrate the urgent need and hardship these people face. Despite their rich culture and the amazing accomplishments of the past their future remains uncertain.
